Upon My Dying

I have known the gray
of loneliness
I have known the anguish
of loss
I have known the folly
of ignorance
I have known the evil
of intolerance
I have known the anxiety
of uncertainty
I have known the despair
of failure
I have known the darkness
of depression
I have feared death would take me
'ere I had fully lived

But...

I have known the vigor
of youth
I have known the pride
of a parent
I have known the trust
of a friend
I have known the thrill
of performance
I have known the wonder
of travel
I have known the beauty
of nature
I have known the perfection
of art
I have known the glory
of music
I have known the love
of a soulmate
I have known the joy
of children
I have known the passion
of learning
I have known the ecstasy
of ideas
I have known the satisfaction
of creation
I have known the triumph
of achievement
I have known the question
of God
I have known the clarity
of reason
I have known the light
of truth
I have known the serenity
of fulfillment

I have known all these things
My life is complete
And now I shall know

of eternity...
